Released September 30, 1997. Dylan’s 1997 Time Out of Mind was his first collection of new material in some seven years, and the songs reflect his depression at the loss of his wife, Carolyn Dennis, through divorce. The songs are melancholy and resigned, but powerful. Well into his 50s by this time, there’s a tinge of the dred of mortality in songs like Not Dark Yet and Trying to Get to Heaven. You can hear the depression in what many think is a simple love song like Make You Feel My Love. The young Dylan may be gone, but the crusty old Dylan we have here is just as disconcerting. Time Out of Mind is one of Dylan’s. Love Sick is the first track of Dylan’s 30th studio album, Time Out of Mind.
Time Out of Mind feels like the antithesis of our pervasive need to have an opinion about everything all the time. It is a reflection on a life lived, not a reaction to someone else’s ideas. There’s a place for both, as Dylan’s own brash, youthful songs made clear a half-century ago. The difference is one of insight, of 55 years of life slowly distilled into wisdom. Everything won’t be alright, but desolation can be its own unlikely source of triumph. Dylan had a grief that gave him nowhere to go but the grave-or, as he did, onward.

After spending much of the '90s touring and simply not writing songs, Bob Dylan returned in 1997 with Time Out of Mind, his first collection of new material in seven years. Where Under the Red Sky, his last collection of original compositions, had a casual, tossed-off feel, Time Out of Mind is carefully considered, from the densely detailed songs to the dark, atmospheric production
Time Out Of Mind (CD, Album). You can say I was on anything but a roll If I had a conscience, well I just might blow my top
Album · 1997 · 11 Songs. By 1997, fans were wondering whether Bob Dylan had anything left in his artistic tank, but a near-fatal illness had clearly inspired him, resulting in a dark, moody album filled with resignation and visions of mortality. The spare and loose Trying to Get to Heaven and the mysteriously beautiful Not Dark Yet are album centerpieces, while Til I Fell in Love You, with its droning organ, tells us that new love isn’t without deep tensions and anxiety. The haunting Daniel Lanois production captures Dylan’s mood, and his croaking vocals, perfectly. Time Out of Mind Bob Dylan.

Time Out of Mind is Dylan’s first studio release since the solo acoustic bookends Good As I Been to You (1992) and World Gone Wrong (1993), which reinvestigated the songs that fired his passion as a long-ago would-be Woody Guthrie. Now, Dylan has made a coherent, sonically striking but equally subdued ensemble album that sorts through the mess of the more recent past. Save for the brief reminder midway through Highlands, the audacity of the young, supremely confident Dylan is long gone. In its place has come a voice that is less instantly arresting but nearly as disconcerting.
Time Out of Mind was a commercial success for Dylan. It was widely hailed as Dylan's comeback album and . sales soon passed platinum and stayed on best-selling charts for 29 weeks. In UK the sales passed gold. The album, in other countries also, managed to secure positions on best-selling charts and remained there for several weeks.
