The original soundtrack to Brian De Palma's Phantom of the Paradise is a good example of how a soundtrack can be more effective during the course of a movie than on its own. With Paul Williams singing the stronger tracks (and starring in the movie ), most of the cuts from Phantom of the Paradise suffer from being draped in early-'70s singer/songwriter mawkishness, with an effort to put a Broadway spin on some rather weak rock & roll material

Although many Phantom Phans prefer the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, Ennio Morricone's soundtrack to the Dario Argento film "PHANTOM OF THE OPERA" is still a treat. This music stands on its own, apart from the movie, and illicits deep emotion from the listener. Close your eyes and be swept off to the opera stage or the catacombs deep below.
Chart-wise, the album performed fairly well, reaching the top position of Billboard's soundtracks chart as well as the sixteenth position on the Top 200 chart. It was also certified Platinum in the US and Gold in the UK and Greece .
