The insinuating and expressive score by Jonny Greenwood - with its blend of Minimalist-like riffs, eerie harmonies, alluring melodic lines you don’t quite trust, and piercing chords that leap about aimlessly - conveys both the posh glamour of the designer’s world and his inner obsessions. The music has brought Mr. Greenwood, 46, the longtime guitarist of Radiohead, a much-deserved Oscar nomination for Best Original Score. When he called recently from his home near Oxford, England, it was revealing, and rather charming, that he referred several times to his patchy music education.

On Phantom Thread, Greenwood is best when he’s subtler, which allows his music to melt into the film more easily. Take Never Cursed, a light, almost ethereal string composition that plays during a feverish sequence where Daniel Day-Lewis’ character falls into a hallucinatory illness as his team of seamstresses repair a wedding dress. Ultimately, the biggest issue with Greenwood’s score is that its sumptuousness can be overbearing: The orchestra whacks you over the head from scene to scene as it telegraphs one emotion after another. The score can run counter to some of Phantom Thread’s most cutting points, and it vanishes during the most important scenes. So much of the film looks at how minuscule gestures, done wrong, can destroy not just routine, but tradition: A slice of toast buttered too loudly or a stitch out of place is equivalent to a disaster.

December 22, 2017 In News. Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood’s original soundtrack for Phantom Thread is being released on Record Store Day 2018, via Nonesuch. Phantom Thread marks the fourth collaboration between Greenwood and Anderson. Its score features 18 compositions created by Greenwood, performed by a sixty member string orchestra conducted by Robert Ziegler.

Genre: Modern Classical. Jonny Greenwood was equal to the task with musical accompaniment that doesn't just take your breath away, it steals it, leaving you gasping in reverence.
