This Vetiver covers album not surprisingly digs exclusively in the crate marked "1967-1973", culling its tracks from the catalogs of artists like Hawkwind, Townes Van Zandt, and Michael Hurley. Covers albums ask you to set aside some of rock crit's most reliable qualitative barometers, songwriting and "artistic growth," for a slightly different set of evaluative tools such as interpretative skill and aesthetic cohesion. But what most fans (and covers albums are primarily for fans) expect from a covers collection is a private tour of a band's basement: its nascent. Make no mistake, Thing of the Past is a perfectly pleasant, well-produced album that offers an authorized version of what Vetiver fans already unofficially know about the band. And if it doesn't make many false steps, it isn't exactly walking a ledge.

Vetiver has been criticized for wearing their influences too comfortably, and Thing of the Past seems like not an effort to combat those criticisms, but to embrace them. It’s as if Oasis, two albums into their career, had released an album of Beatles songs. From Wobble Up to Just Like That, he finds no shortage of ways to tell women how to sit on his dick.

This is what Vetiver does on Thing of the Past. The collection is strong throughout, full of well-chosen songs that are executed with a charming air of reverence, but also with a mind towards craft. The album goes a long way towards informing fans about the band's first two records, shedding light on corners in those recordings previously too dark for us to see.
