Sir Simon Rattle is standing at the helm of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra for the fifth time. This time he will indulge his passion for Robert Schumann; having presented the oratorio Paradise and the Peri and the Second Symphony, he will now conduct the Third Symphony, the Rhenish, in E flat major. The superstitious composer inserted Das Lied von der Erde (Song of the Earth) between his Eighth and Ninth Symphonies, hoping to delay the composition of his Ninth from fear it would be his last, as it was for Beethoven and Bruckner. In the end it was granted him to write a Tenth, which, however, remained unfinished. The very subtitle of his orchestral song-cycle – Symphony for two voices and full orchestra – underlines its symphonic character.

Magdalena sings her beloved Mélisande in this highly anticipated new recording of Debussy’s evocative opera Pelléas et Mélisande. It was captured in January 2016 during performances of an innovative collaboration between Sir Simon Rattle and Peter Sellars, two of the boldest creative minds in music and theatre today. Rattle leads London Symphony Orchestra and an all-star cast supported by the London Symphony Chorus, prepared by renowned choral director Simon Halsey. Brooding Defiant Lyrical Majestic Nihilistic Nostalgic Playful Rhapsodic Romantic. Magdalena Kožená, Stuart Skelton, Simon Rattle, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde. Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde came after a difficult period in his life when his daughter died from a childhood disease, he was forced out of his opera conducting position by anti-Semitism, and he was diagnosed with a serious congenital heart condition. He seems to have put his symphonic ideas into song, as it were, as a kind of personal response to these problems, and the work, for all its gigantism and its half-hour finale, has a peculiarly intimate quality.
