Description

His teacher, Dmitri Shostakovich, completed the opera, but the anti-Semitic Stalinist regime banned it after one performance in Moskau 1960.

Rothschild's Violin (Russian: Скрипка Ротшильда) is a one-act opera by Russian composer Veniamin Fleishman (1913–1941) set to the Russian libretto by the composer after the short story "Rothschild's Fiddle" by Anton Chekhov. The opera centres on the bitter central character, Yakov Ivanov, a coffin-maker and amateur fiddler, his gradual understanding of life and his bequest of his violin to Rothschild, who also plays in the Jewish band with Ivanov and whom he has treated with contempt.

Rothschild's Violin (Conclusion). One Act opera written by Fleishman between 1939 & 1941. After Fleishman's death in 1941, Shostakovich completed the orchestrations. Article on back cover by Rozhdestvensky in Russian & English.

Veniamin Iosifovich Fleishman, (Russian: Вениами́н Ио́сифович Фле́йшман, July 20, 1913, Bezhetsk, Tver Governorate – September 14, 1941, Krasnoye Selo, Leningrad Oblast) was a Soviet composer. While studying under Dmitri Shostakovich at the Leningrad Conservatory (1939–1941), he began a one-act opera Rothschild's Violin based on Anton Chekhov’s short story about Bronza, a Russian country coffin-maker and violinist, and his combative relationship with the Jewish musicians in his village.

tch : Le Violin de Rothschild - Chostakovitch : Les joueurs, opéra o. 3, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra - Dir. Vasily Petrenko. Veniamin Fleishman (1913-1941) began his opera Rothschild's Violin, based on Chekhov, while he was studying under Shostakovich, but he volunteered for the People's Volunteer Guard and was killed in combat in 1941. Shostakovich thought highly of his student, and rescued the manuscript from Leningrad, scored it (in 1943-1944) and attempted - apparently unsuccessfully - to get it staged.

Veniamin Fleishman was a pupil of Shostakovich who is known now for just one work, the opera Rothschild's Violin, which was left incomplete at his death. Born in 1913, Fleishman studied with Shostakovich in the late 1930s in Leningrad, but when the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, he joined the army and was killed just a few months later.

Fleishman: Rothschild's Violin; Shostakovich: The Gamblers. A reasonable, if slightly cynical question to ask about this set including Shostakovich 's completion and orchestration of Benjamin Fleischmann 's opera Rothschild's Violin and his own incomplete opera The Gamblers might be, "Wouldn't it have been smarter, and more of a gift to posterity, if Shostakovich had used the time and energy he spent on Fleischmann 's opera completing his.
