Louis Thomas Hardin (May 26, 1916 – September 8, 1999), also known as Moondog, was an American musician, composer, theoretician, poet and inventor of several musical instruments. He was blind from the age of 16. Hardin lived in New York City from the late 1940s until 1972, and during this time he could often be found on 6th Avenue, between 52nd and 55th Streets, wearing a cloak and a horned helmet sometimes busking or selling music, but often just standing silently on the sidewalk.

This BGO Records reissue, Moondog - Moondog 2, debuted in England literally on the heels of news of Hardin's passing in 1999, and it is hard not to fault label for cashing in on stakes made liquid by the ever-unpredictable vicissitudes of the grim reaper. For many listeners, the first Moondog CBS album is his defining statement, even as what came before, and after, broadens the picture of Hardin's output considerably.

Moondog is the fifth album by American composer Moondog. Moondog had released no music for twelve years since his 1957 album The Story of Moondog The resulting album compiled various music which Moondog had been working on since the 1950s.

A singular figure in the history of American music, Moondog produced a body of work that served as a touchstone for figures as diverse as Albert Ayler, Janis Joplin, Michael Hurley, and Glenn Branca. His deceptively simple music embraces American folk traditions and some of the more radical ideas emerging from the New York jazz scene of the time, such as the modal improvisations being conceived by Miles Davis and John Coltrane.
