Duke ellington's greatest hits. Columbia Legacy CK 65419. This compilation is more intriguing than the track listing might first appear due to the fact many of the versions are from less obvious 78rpm & LP sources (see below for more detailed information). 1) Satin Doll 31 Mar 1958 from DUKE ELLINGTON AT THE BAL MASQUE. 2) Don't Get Around Much Anymore (vocal Al Hibbler) 20 Nov 1947 from THE CHRONOLOGICAL DUKE ELLINGTON & HIS ORCHESTRA 1947-1948 (CLASSICS), 78rpm. This Greatest Hits album has the advantage that it's a re-issue of the original Columbia album from the late sixties, and one of a series that was produced to bring a number of big name artists to perhaps wider attention at a time when jazz wasn't as popular as it had been. Other titles include hits from Theolonius Monk, Count Basie and Miles Davis. But back to Ellington.
