Duke Ellington's appearance at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival has long been famous, and justifiably so. Paul Gonsalves' 27-chorus tenor solo on "Diminuendo in Blue and Crescendo in Blue" practically started a riot at Newport and made headlines around the world. The momentum generated by this concert led to Ellington's comeback and never let up during his 18 remaining years. A double CD put out in 1999 presents the entire concert performance, previously unheard material, and a few revelations.
For Jazz, Ellington was the first orchestra leader to substitute voices for instruments, he popularized the Baritone Sax when he engaged Harry Carney, he influenced countless bands and dance orchestras. Beginning with his "Jungle Band" to his "Famous Orchestra" which appeared at Carnegie Hall numerous times and even introduced several Jazz suite that Duke had composed, Ellington his the most successful and important orchestra leader in Jazz history. Success did not come easily taking him many years of devoted work to make a name for himself.

Overall, Ellington At Newport is a monumental jazz recording and an essential listening to anyone with the remotest interest in jazz. It’s an album whose history is just as compelling and exciting as the music it’s contained within. The talent of the performers is something to behold, at least from the perspective of someone who isn’t particularly knowledgeable about the intricacies of brass instruments. The sounds that musicians such as Paul Gonsales are able to produce are ones you wouldn’t expect to be in the range of their instrument of choice
Prior to Newport, Duke Ellington's band had been in a creative and commercial downturn-so there was little buildup to this set. Now part of jazz lore, it’s immortalized for the riot-inducing 27-chorus solo by tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves on Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue (where Ellington can be heard urging him on as the crowd erupts) and several other tracks that fed off the crowd’s energy, particularly Skin Deep and a stompin’ Jeep’s Blues. It's the recording that made Ellington the beloved elder statesman we know him as today
