Hunter's next album, Overnight Angels (1977), was produced by Roy Thomas Baker and featured a heavier guitar sound courtesy of former Bowie sideman Earl Slick. Hunter's record label in America, Columbia Records, refused to release the album in the US due to issues concerning Hunter's management: "Overnight Angels was not released in the US because I fired my manager, Fred Heller, during the English promotional tour – just before it was to be released in America. Columbia said they didn't want to release it until I had new management and that dragged on until it became.

Exclusive Prime pricing. Good (not "great") but still, a welcome addition to my Ian Hunter collection. Opens with a real upbeat "Golden Opportunity" that has a bit of the feel of Mott The Hoople's "Crash Street Kids". The ballads/quieter songs here are atypical of Ian's melodic style and still have some echoes of older, better known material.

With Ian Hunter coming off two solidly excellent solo albums, hopes for his third were sky high, all the more so since he had returned, nominally at least, to a band format with the Earl Slick fired Overnight Angels. The truth of the matter, however, was incomparably sadder, as the ensuing disc emerged bloated, tired and almost wholly lacking in the energies that had hitherto fired Hunter's work. Overnight angels? More like overweight
