The Heath Robinson enterprise known as Smallfilms gave us such enduring shows as The Clangers, Pogles’ Wood and Ivor the Engine. The music for all of them was written by Elliott, a founder member of the Philharmonia Orchestra, and occasional performer at the Royal Opera House, who also had a taste for jazz. It is playful but extraordinarily melancholy music for a children’s TV soundtrack, led by Elliott’s bassoon with support from woodwind, piano and the odd choir. It sounds as if it was made in a thatched cottage in the Home Counties – probably in November. A bonus is the fine packaging that.

In keeping with their settings, the music for Pogles Wood and Ivor The Engine was stripped of avant-garde flourishes. The main Ivor theme included here is akin to a 12-inch (or, if you like, wide-gauge) version – with a minute of Satiesque piano and Elliott’s bassoon preceding the recognizably jaunty bit. Much of what follows is really just colour ( Ivor Resists Starting is the sort of thing you insert as light relief when making CD-Rs for friends) but just as much is unexpectedly moving: the choir on Land Of My Fathers and the bucolic canter of Fast Theme.

he Postgate and Smallfilms output has a worldwide following, and this magical music contributes greatly to the impact these legendary TV adventures have had. The music is wistful, sad, pastoral and utterly charming, the CDs look wonderful, sound. 0 EUR . 1. 9 EUR. 50% Discount.

Pogles Wood, television series score. 18. Intro by Oliver Postgate.

Ivor the Engine was a poorly animated British television show about a little train which rolled through Northern Wales in the early '60s. The program's sappy story lines and so-simple-it’s-funny sound effects were the basis for a memorable and quirky childhood experience.

Album was composed by Vernon Elliott and was released on February 25, 2008. Soundtrack consists of 39 tracks tracks with duration over about 40 minutes. Album was released by Trunk Records. Furthermore, it's inexpensive. CD 1. Oliver Postgate Intro and Main Ivor.

Ivor The Engine And Pogles Wood. Ivor and the Pogles are distinct in sound and mood but still feel united by the virtue of both being from the same pen, Vernon Elliot. In a way this sums up the TV series as well - they're very different but they're from the same pen, Oliver Postgate, so they feel unified in some way. The content of the disc is much more Pogles than Ivor, despite the cover, and the Ivor material is much more memorable. Of course, I love anything with a bassoon, so I'm biased

Notes

"This is the first time this beautiful music has been issued. It was originally composed by Vernon Elliott and recorded by the Vernon Elliott Ensemble in the 1960s for the Smallfilms productions "Ivor The Engine", "The Pogles" and "Pogles Wood". All sound here comes from the quarter inch master tapes stored in Oliver Postgate's "underworld" and includes the most beautiful music, original effects and more besides."

This release is split into two halves - Ivor The Engine between tracks 1-17, and Pogles Wood between 18-39.
