But along/up/down the road normally refers to the pavement (if you are a pedestrian!). To me street means the pavement, or the part for vehicles, or both. I don't think of in the street as in the middle of the street. One thing occurred to me though, if I were facing an upwards hill (and there was a road on it) and I was at the bottom, I would describe my journey as: "I walked up the street. and never "I walked down the street". The 'down' means either you're descending, or walking on level ground, but NOT going up.
