Description

Das Liebesverbot (The Ban on Love) is an early opera in two acts by Richard Wagner, with the libretto written by the composer after Shakespeare's Measure.

Hamburg SO/Heribert Beissel, Radio Luxembourg SO/Alois Springer, Minnesota Orchestra/ Stanislaw Skrowaczewski. Label: Carlton Turnabout. The Symphony is not the operatic Wagner without voices, but instead owes much to Weber, Schumann and Beethoven, as do the overtures (Liebesverbot sounds like Gilbert & Sullivan at times). Die Feen begins to point the way to more familiar Wagnerian sounds whilst the Tristan Prelude merely underlines the quantum leap between it and the other works, despite the idiomatic and sympathetic performances they get here.

The overtures to Die Feen and Das Liebesverbot are taken from Wagner's earliest operas, which are rarely performed in their entirety, though these pieces may be heard occasionally as lively concert openers. Among Wagner's early attempts at composing purely orchestral music, the Concert Overture No. 1 in D minor, the Concert Overture No. 2 in C major, as well as the overtures from his incidental music to the stage plays König Enzio and Christopher Columbus, show the strong influence of Beethoven and the first signs of Wagner's own forceful personality.

The present album, however, isn't necessarily one of them unless you are specifically looking for something out of the way. The strongest virtue of this collection of early Wagner overtures is that it offers up some little-known, little-heard music by the composer. Beyond that, I'm afraid it can get a little dicey. The best disk of early Wagner overtures I know is from a two-CD set by Marek Janowski. One CD, with the French Radio Phil, offers mainstream Wagner excerpts from Tannhäuser, Tristan, Lohengrin and Meistersinger, plus Siegfried Idyll, all very well played. Janowski also offers better versions of the Die Feen and Das Liebesverbot overtures, while the versions in the Sawallisch complete recordings of these two early Wagner operas are better still. But the Rahbari/Malaga Phil performances of each of these pieces are still perfectly satisfactory in every way.

1 - Concert Overture No. 2 in C Major, WWV 27 2 - Columbus- Overture - Christopher Columbus, WWV 37 3 - Die Feen, WWV 32- Overture 4 - Das Liebesverbot, WWV 38- Overture 5 - Concert Overture No. 1 in D Minor, WWV 20 6 - König Enzio- Overture - Incidental Music to König Enzio, WWV 24 7 - Siegfried Idyll, WWV. 103 - Siegfried Idyll, WWV 10. The two high-octane Concert Overtures reflect his Beethovenian and Classical lineage, whereas the overture to the historical tragedy König Enzio reveals a greater sense of melancholy and nobility. Siegfried Idyll, a surprise birthday gift for his second wife, Cosima, is a tender and intimate celebration of scenes of family life.

Die Feen: Overture by Richard Wagner Conductor: Alois Springer Orchestra/Ensemble: Hamburg Symphony Orchestra Period: Romantic Written: 1834; Germany. 15. Parsifal: Good Friday Music by Richard Wagner Conductor: Jerzy Semkow Orchestra/Ensemble: St. Louis Symphony Orchestra Period: Romantic Written: 1877-1882; Germany. 16. Siegfried Idyll by Richard Wagner Conductor: Heinrich Hollreiser Orchestra/Ensemble: Bamberg Symphony Orchestra Period: Romantic Written: 1870; Germany. I purchased it because it was the more important overtures all in one package and, for whatever reason, I thought the performances and recording quality would be very good. Its not. I won't speak to the performances as they are fine and I basically like them.
