Beethoven's symphonies are among the cornerstones of the symphonic repertoire. They bear witness to the composer's remarkable journey from airy Classicism to the peerless idiom he had developed on the threshold of the Romantic epoch. This remarkable complete recording of Beethoven's symphonies was made during Kletzki's performances with the Czech Philharmonic in 1967, during the orchestra's goldenage under the chief conductor Karel Ančerl.
Performers: Czech Philharmonic Orchestra Paul Kletzki Czech Philharmonic Chorus Josef Veselka (Op. 125) Ingeborg Wenglor soprano, Annelis Burmeister mezzo-soprano, Martin Ritzmann tenor, Rolf Kühne bass (Op. 125). Recorded between 1964 and 1968, Paul Kletzki's respected cycle of Ludwig van Beethoven's symphonies on Supraphon rightly should be classified as a historical item for specialists, rather than as a recommended option for anyone seeking a great (and great sounding) modern set. Kletzki was an admired and popular conductor, noted for working with.
Orchestra: Czech Philharmonic. Conductor: Paul Kletzki. Composer: Ludwig van Beethoven. Audio CD (April 26, 2011). In his renderings of Beethoven's symphonies, immortalized in this box, he gets a combination of beauty and energy that strikes the dead center of the listener's palette. Kletzki and the Czech Philharmonic bring out much not often heard detail, but with no loss of forcefulness. These are vintage 60s performances, you aren't going to get many exposition or scherzo repeats. But the vigor and beauty of the playing more than compensate for this typical feature of Beethoven playing of that time.

Adagio molto e cantabile.
The nine symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) were of fundamental importance to the future development of the genre, and indeed no composer who embarked on symphonic composition after Beethoven was able to avoid reacting to them in some way or other. A good many years after Beethoven's death they were still regarded as unsurpassable achievements, indeed as the culmination of the genre, and Robert Schumann, for example, even felt convinced that with these works the development of the symphony had come to a close.
