Fire and Skill – The Jam Live. The title of the collection refers to a motto inscribed on Paul Weller's guitar amplifier.

The discography of the British band The Jam consists of 6 studio albums, 5 live albums, 14 compilation albums, 6 videos, 1 tribute album, 3 extended plays, 19 hit singles and 16 re-issues, as well as two B-Sides. The band, who formed in 1972, didn't debut until five years later in 1977, when they released their debut studio album In the City, which entered at place in the UK Albums Chart, and contained the title-track, "In the City"

Named after the legend painted on Paul Weller’s amp, Fire And Skill is a superb six disc boxed set – featuring six previously unreleased concerts, one from each year of The Jam’s major-label career.

Each track on the album was performed by a different artist or band. Buffalo Tom singer/guitarist Bill Janovitz was surprised to have the chance to do "Going Underground", saying that his band usually had to be content with doing also-ran songs on compilations such as this. Janovitz said he felt like playing the song in his band's usual style sounded way too much like The Jam, so he and his bandmates reinterpreted it in a slower, less manic style A double A-side single of "Going Undergrou.

The eclectic array of artists who cover The Jam's songs (not all of the songs covered here are "the hits") is a nice indicator of how influential The Jam were, despite never really busting wide open in America.
