Description

The Solo Sessions, Vol. 1 is an album by jazz pianist Bill Evans, released in 1989. Evans recorded The Solo Sessions, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 at the same session, on January 10, 1963 and the tracks were originally released as part of Bill Evans: The Complete Riverside Recordings in 1984.

This magnificent 12-CD set contains all of Bill Evans' Riverside recordings as a leader, an extremely important period in the influential pianist's development. The first session predates Evans' period with the Miles Davis Sextet and other significant sessions include his sets with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian (highlighted by the marathon Village Vanguard session of June 25, 1961), Evans' return nearly a year after LaFaro's death in a car accident with a new trio (consisting of Motian and bassist Chuck Israels.

The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings, 1961, a three-CD box set released in 2005, marks the first time the entire Bill Evans Trio's complete sets at the Village Vanguard on June 25, 1961 have been released in their entirety (outside of the twelve-disc set containing Evans' complete Riverside recordings). It also marks the first US release of the first take of "Gloria's Step," which is incomplete due to a power failure.

The following is a listing of the jazz pianist Bill Evans' original albums. He recorded over 50 albums as a leader between 1956 and 1980 and also played as a sideman on nearly as many more. He broke new ground in many of his piano trio, duet and solo recordings. Several of those won or were nominated for Grammy Awards. Jerry Wald and his Orchestra (1953). Listen to the Music of Jerry Wald (1955). The Singing Reed (1955). A Message from Garcia (1955).

The Complete Riverside Recordings is a cool jazz music boxset, compilation recording by BILL EVANS (PIANO) released in 1984 on CD, LP/Vinyl and/or cassette. Riverside Records ‎– R-018 (US). Fortunately for listeners with a budget, nearly all of this material has since been reissued on single CDs (mostly as part of the Original Jazz Classics series), but true Bill Evans fanatics will have to get this remarkable box.

Listening to pianist Bill Evans’ recently released box set, The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings, 1961 (Concord/Fantasy), it’s easy to understand why jazz was loved and popular then and why it’s decidedly un-loved today. Sucker-punching an ill-informed public that wouldn’t know Louis Armstrong if he walked up and sold them a joint, the media has been whipping on jazz a lot lately, from the Rocky wannabe jazz charade masquerading as a film, Whiplash, to the unconscionable parody of tenor saxophone great Sonny Rollins in the usually urbane pages of the New Yorker. Transferred from 4. digital files originally extracted for a Japanese CD box set, Bill Evans’ The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings, 1961 is an intensely enjoyable listen, low resolution sampling rate be damned.

Bill Evans recorded his debut solo album as a leader for Riverside Records in the Fall of 1956 and recorded five more albums over the next three years, mostly for the label founded by Orrin Keepnews and Bill Grauer. By 1961 he really hit his stride as a leader when he recorded Explorations for Riverside in February of that year, with Scott LaFaro (bass) and Paul Motian (drums). It was the beginning of an extremely fruitful period that is celebrated in this CD collection.
