S&M (an abbreviation of Symphony and Metallica) is a live album by American heavy metal band Metallica, with The San Francisco Symphony conducted by Michael Kamen. It was recorded on April 21–22, 1999 at The Berkeley Community Theatre. This is the final Metallica album to feature Jason Newsted as Metallica's bassist. S&M contains performances of Metallica songs with additional symphonic accompaniment, which was composed by Michael Kamen, who also conducted the orchestra during the concert

S&M (short for "Symphony & Metallica") contains performances of Metallica songs with additional symphonic accompaniment, which was composed by Michael Kamen, who also conducted the orchestra during the concert. The idea to combine heavy metal with an epic classical approach, as James Hetfield has stated repeatedly, was an idea of Cliff Burton.

Probably the best Live album of Metallica's discography ever. There might be pretty explosions in Cunning Stunts, and there may be no slow, bluesy music in Live Shit, but S&M is just really epic! Why is it epic? First of all, the combination of two genres of skilled music (metal and classical) is good when dOne right. When dOne perfectly, it can be a masterpiece.

But Metallica were about as lean and clean as we had been for a long time, and were certainly ready and prepared to step up that extra notch to the challenge. After a couple of days of rehearsal, the shows took place at the Berkeley Community Theatre in California on April 21 and 22, 1999. In addition to being recorded for a double album, ‘S&M’ was also filmed for a video and DVD release. S&M’ was released Nov. 23, 1999, and made it to No. 2 on the Billboard Album chart. It would go on to sell . million copies, and since it was a double album meant it was certified five times platinum. It would also garner Metallica another Grammy, as they took home the trophy in 2001 for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for ‘The Call of Ktulu. It would be the last album appearance for bassist Jason Newsted. Metallica - ‘S&M’ Track Listing
