On Metallica, 10 of the album’s 12 songs once again utilized E standard tuning, but the band mixed it up a little more at Bob Rock’s behest, dropping the guitars to D standard for Sad but True and Eb for The God That Failed. 6. The album also marked the first time that Metallica had ever recorded their basic tracks live together in the studio. We wanted a live feel, James Hetfield told Guitar World in 1991. 7. Metallica's fifth studio album, self-titled album (commonly known as The Black Album) was released on August 12, 1991 by Elektra Records. We knew we had to move on and the Black Album was the opposite. I got it from a cut off Ice-T’s Power album, where he sampled it. I heard that and thought, I have to snake this! 6.
It is, however, the first Metallica album to make me wonder at any point, 'What the fuck was that?' It's as if the jackboot grinding the human face were to take occasional breaks for a pedicure. In The Village Voice, Robert Christgau said "this is just a metal record with less solo room, which is good because it concentrates their chops, and more singing, which isn't because they. Then, three months into the album-making process, frontman James Hetfield announced he was entering rehab for alcohol abuse and "other addictions. Six months later, Hetfield checked himself out of rehab, then rejoined the band - it didn't mean that things were automatically hunky-dory. As revealed in 2004's warts-and-all documentary Some Kind of Monster, Metallica had to work through years and years of accumulated shit during the creation of St. Anger.
