A handful of other Nick Drake compilations had existed before this one, but Way to Blue remains the definitive primer for aspiring and casual fans. Compiled by Boyd, Drake's producer and initial champion, the tracks here are chosen and sequenced with great tenderness and care, offering key tracks from his elegant 1969 debut Five Leaves Left; his more colorful 1970 follow-up Bryter Layter; and his final record, 1972's spare masterpiece Pink Moon.

Drake was born on 19 June 1948 in Yangon, Burma and returned with his family to England in 1950. He was encouraged by his mother to learn piano and later learned clarinet and saxophone while attending Marlborough College

Every note Nick Drake recorded before his accidental overdose in 1974 throbs with similar aching beauty. Morning-glory vocals, couplets of such Elizabethan elegance as Open up the broken cup/Let goodly sin and sunshine in and arrangements that wed jazz freedom to the dignity of string quartets make his music - part folk song, part art song - incandescent. Working a single mood almost exclusively - ecstatic yearning - Drake captures in songs like Northern Sky and Time of No Reply moments of uncanny grace.
