Douglas Memorial Community Church, Located at Madison and Lafayette Avenues, in Baltimore, Maryland, asa had a long tradition of excellence in music since its founding. Choirs under Evangeline P. Mitchell Caswell Were favorites of the founder, Rev. Frederick Douglas, and were noted for an abundance of excellent soloists.
This tradition of excellence in music has continued under the present minister, Dr. Marion C. Bascom. This was ably demonstrated when he was able to obtain the services of James Spencer Hammond as the Minister of Music in 1959. Since his arrival , the music program has showed steady improvement both in quality of performance and in repertoire.
Thus recording presents excerpts from two performances given in the spring of 1972. The first was the Saint Cecilia Mass by Charles Gounod performed on April 16, 1972. From this work the choir sings the Kyrie, the Gloria, the Sanctus, and Agnus Dei.
From the concert Afro-American Music held on May 14, 1972, excerpted here are several spirituals familiar to most black congregations with traditional southern roots. Most of the arrangements are by well known black composers who are careful to maintain the basic traditional spiritual quality."in-a That New Jerusalem" is arranged by a highly qualified composer, Robert DeCormier. This selection is one that was frequently sung by the gospel quartets that were soi very popular in the late nineteen thirties and forties. DeCormier does not forget these roots, for preserved in the aura and the essential stylistic traits of the obsolescent gospel quartet, a style that moved many church and radio audiences in what may be described as the "golden era of quartets".
The Stirring "union Band" is an arrangement by the old master, R. Nathaniel Dett. Its style is that of a jubilee and was probably intended to convey a dual meaning, religious and secular. This type of song was used frequently by the underground railroad to convey messages to slaves contemplating escape. This "secret-art" of dualism pervades also the spiritual, "There's a Meeting Here Tonight", arranged by John Work.
The Final selection, "My Lord What a Meaning", possesses another interesting feature. Often in performance-practice, depending upon the arrangement used, the word "morning" becomes "moanin" or "mourning" with each word subtly changing the song's meaning from a revelation of the past to a prognosis of the future. To a Time and world that has experienced Auschwitz; Hiroshima, the zillion tons of napalm on Vietnam, the Bay of Pigs, the Nazi machine; Abraham, Martin and John, the arrogance of South Africa, Black Power,; Malcolm X... a hundreds years of holocaust and of man's inhumanity to man - what more can be said other than - My lord what a (moanin, mourning, morning)?
