The sentence is a pop cultural reference to a 1972 Michael Nesmith album called "And the hits just keep on coming". Nesmith was a member of the American-British pop/rock group The Monkees. In Tom Cruise's usage of the sentence within the movie's context, it carries a layered meaning; in one sense the "hits" are jabs (a boxing reference which, when taken figuratively, means insults), and on the other hand the "hits" are in reference to popular songs, as used by radio deejays of the time and implicit in the Nesmith album.

Reflecting on the album in 2019, Nesmith said, It was at a time when we were all fast and loose and playing music as hard as we could. In 1972, Michael Nesmith had released four albums for RCA Records that didn't sell especially well, and he had parted ways with his band, with only pedal steel guitarist Red Rhodes interested in working on Nesmith's next project. RCA gave Nesmith a limited window of time to make his next album for them, so it was necessity rather than design that led Nesmith to cut And the Hits Just Keep on Comin' with just himself on acoustic guitar and Rhodes on pedal steel
