Dissection released a number of live albums and EPs before its final dissolution, and played a central role in the development of Sweden's black metal and death metal scenes, particularly through the influence of the first two albums; it has sometimes been described as part of the Gothenburg scene. The Past Is Alive is a compilation album by Dissection. It contains tracks from early EPs and promos. It also includes two tracks by Satanized, the former band of Jon Nödtveidt. Some versions also include two tracks taken from the Where Dead Angels Lie EP. It has been released. The Somberlain is the debut album by Swedish black metal band Dissection, released on December 3, 1993. It proved to be a highly influential release for both black metal and melodic death metal. The band dedicated the album to Euronymous, who had been murdered in August the same year.

The songs which were on the promo for The Somberlain are shorter than they turned out to be on the official release of the album. Even with the undergrounds production and the somewhat short track lengths, the album is an awesome look at classic Dissection material from back when they were playing their best stuff. The riffs are jaw-dropping. We are also treated to the fantastic, soothing acoustic guitar on the two instrumentals Into Infinite Obscurity and Feathers Fell.
