Crazy Horse is an American rock band best known for their association with Neil Young. They have also released six studio albums of their own, issued between 1971 and 2009.

Neil Young revived Crazy Horse last year for a series of low-profile theater gigs in California. They were the first performances by the group without guitarist Frank Poncho Sampedro since he joined in 1975. I’m 70 and I’m retired now and want to stay home, Sampedro recently told Uncut. People say, ‘Isn’t it sad you’re not in Crazy Horse?’ I don’t think of it that way. I’ll always be in Crazy Horse. Sampedro was replaced by Nils Lofgren, who recorded with Crazy Horse on a 1971 album they recorded without Neil Young. He also played with Young and the Crazy Horse rhythm section of Ralph Molina and Billy Talbot on Tonight’s The Night and the supporting tour in 1973. It’s been a beautiful opportunity to play with dear friends that are still alive and well, Lofgren recently told Rolling Stone. Look, I hope there’s more, but I’ll take it a gig at a time right now.

Crazy Horse is the debut album by Crazy Horse, released in 1971 by Reprise Records. It is the only album by the band to feature Danny Whitten, and it peaked at on the Billboard 200 album chart. During sessions for Gold Rush, they met teenage guitar prodigy Nils Lofgren, who joined the band in time for this album, picking up a contract with Reprise Records after the exposure garnered from their association with Young. This was Whitten's last album release before his death from a drug overdose in 1972. For the recording of this album in the fall of 1970, they also recruited Ry Cooder, who had worked previously with Nitzsche on sessions for the Stones. Cooder plays on three tracks. The album contains compositions from four principal writers.
