I really don't know if it's only me, or do I have the feeling that both releases I have heard where these two heavy weights collaborate, on Ruskin's Blueprint label (BP007) and now on DTR003, the outcome is sub par. I am a huge fan of Surgeon and like Ruskin's work as well to a lesser extent, but there is nothing about "Sound pressure" except the A2 track which would make me want to play it, just as with BP007. A1 is a three minute beatless and organic spiralling short musical piece, where the same sequence complimented with some xylophone notes revolves around its own axis until it fades out. Nothing like the grand and hypnotic opener of the already mentioned BP007 release, where in my opinion, the A1 tunes was the only track worth my time. A2 is great though. Not really fast or crispy, but it has these awesome shuffled drum rolls, and the word tension written all over it. Deep bass line, and the whole tune is practically one big crescendo and build up of few layers, which actually never amount to anything, but it's done with just enough edge and skill to make you want to sit and wait for it, but it never happens, as the track suddenly ends, without warning. Great piece, and that bass line is overwhelming - it can incise its name in my subwoofer! The entire B side is unfortunately pretty dull in my ears. Two tracks with few weakly developed ideas, scarse sounds and effects just put on repeat anywhere from four to five minutes. Kind of like the same thing which ruined BP007 for me. I am usually all for Surgeon's production wizardry and tricks, but I am sorry to say that the entire B side is one of those sad examples of what happpenned to techno in the late nineties - great production, polished sounds, but shallow and repetitve tracks going nowhere and displaying barely enough enthusiasm to validate a running time of two minutes, let alone five... Anyways, A2 is a stellar piece, the rest is not my cup of tea. Some may disagree and some will nod their heads in approval, but in my opinion "Sound pressure" is my least favorite Dynamic Tension release with "East light".
