I don't know if it is me, although I doubt it, but does anyone notice how influential the A side must have been to Reeko while he was recording his recent "Between Ourselves EP" on Planet Rhythm? The B side tunes on that one, Woman Of Black Glove and Mechanical Physics, both awesome pieces in their own right, while not attempted copies of this Surgeon masterpiece, have most certainly been influenced by it. A coincidence? Perhaps, but whatever may take place, make sure to hear both of these releases, or at least the one which you haven't heard yet, and were previously impressed by the other.The Crawling Frog Is Torn And Smiles is not as impressive in my opinion, although it does show a very confident and up do date Surgeon, who, despite obviously aiming at satisfying modern dance floors, does not lose his personality and trademark production tricks. Unsettling textures, gnashing percussion and flexible synth work which extirpates the minimalism and puts the "E" back in techno. Clearly, Surgeon is still deeply rooted in blazing the trail and leading the way.I recommend the A side to those who thought muscle and testosterone have been eliminate and replaced with artificial breast growth hormones, while the B side will suit nicely those into the Sandwell District sound clash between Echospace and the evergreen Downwards. Subtle drive, dub technoish feel yet somehow pretty pulsating and undeviating. This record is a mighty testament to his already great production legacy, and a superb return to the finest of the dance floors.
