It only took eight years, but Jim ORourke dropped a solo album into our laps, and surprise, surprise, its damn good. The Visitor, released on the inimitable Drag City, clocks in at 38 minutes of instrumental bliss.
The first pop-ish album in eight years from Jim O'Rourke turned out to be well worth the wait, and it continued to reward patience once you actually put it on. Almost pathologically subtle, the lone 38-minute piece that makes up the record works like a series of intriguing riddles that are never quite resolved.
Jim O'Rourke (born January 18, 1969) is an American musician and record producer. He was long associated with the Chicago experimental and improv scene. Around 2000, he relocated to New York before moving on to Tokyo, Japan, where he currently resides. O’Rourke is best known for his numerous solo and collaborative projects, many of which are entirely instrumental, and for his tenure as a member of Sonic Youth from 1999 to 2005.
