Sign o' the Times is the ninth studio album by American singer, songwriter, producer, and t Prince. It was first released as a double album on March 30, 1987, by Paisley Park Records and Warner Bros. The album is the follow-up to Parade (1986) and is Prince's first album following his disbanding of the Revolution

Sign o' the Times" is the lead single from American musician Prince's 1987 album of the same name. Despite being negative in nature, the song was originally intended for two separate Prince albums meant to be released in 1986, that were both shelved: Dream Factory and Crystal Ball. Many of the tracks from both of these albums ended up on the album Sign o' the Times.

Sign o’ the Times is difficult to grapple with because there’s so much going on in each track. The up-tempo Play in the Sunshine drops in jazz fusion riffs and choral voices just when you think its winding down. The Cross starts as a mournful song of devotion to Christ with acoustic guitar and sitar before exploding into a huge rock anthem with military drums and fuzz guitar. Because Prince played and recorded the album using now-vintage late ’80s technology there are moments when certain sounds, particularly the drums, are clearly of their era. But these sonic distractions don’t last as the scope of the songs, the musicianship, and overall arrangements are just too glorious to nitpick. Sign o’ the Times is a double album made with a restlessness that never allows it to settle into complacency or formula. It’s a soundtrack to a highly charged and specific period, for both Prince and his listeners.

Sign O the Times mess with your mind Hurry before it's too late Let's fall in love, get married, have a baby We'll call him Nate. if it's a boy. Time, time. About Sign O’ the Times. This hit became the key theme and title track of Prince’s 1987 album, following many unreleased and dismissed projects under different concepts. Here, he expresses his depressed view of the chaotic, frenzied present world – In a funky tune

Prince wanted Sign O' The Times to be a triple album called "The Crystal Ball," but in a rare rebuke, his record company refused, and instead it was pared down to a double album. This was one of the first significant conflicts between Prince and Warner Bros. Records; over the next few years Prince grew to resent the label, which was restricting his output. This led to his name change and public appearances with the word "slave" written on his face. The B-side was "La La La He He He," which appears only on the collection The Hits/The B-Sides

Album: Sign O' The Times. It was released worldwide in March 1987. Eight of the album's seventeen tracks were included on various configurations of the Dream Factory album, planned as the fourth album by Prince and the Revolution. When the Revolution was disbanded in October 1986, Prince reworked the album.

This is not only the best Prince album, but the best album of the 80s, this album is so wildly ambitious with each song being creatively different from each other. I also found this the peak of Prince’s g 4. 1w.

Listen free to Prince – Sign O' The Times (Sign 'O' The Times, Play in the Sunshine and more). Sign ☮ the Times (or Sign O' The Times) is an album by Prince, released on March 31, 1987, on the Paisley Park records label. It's the follow up to Parade, and Prince's first "solo" album since splitting with The Revolution; the symbol between the quotes is a peace sign. The double album was a synthesis of three projects from 1986, including some work with The Revolution

The sonics on this disc are amazing - though I'm sure that this is the case with every release of this album. The music, on the other hand, is not my cup of tea - I like musical minimalism, but it doesn't fit Prince (or Prince doesn't fit it, who knows?) in my opinion - hence, only three stars. The sonic quality of the disc alone would deserve 5 stars, so if you wanna get into the album or need a replacement copy, go for it!

Prince's best. I was obsessed with this album for years on my original cassette version. Picked up the CD version somewhere along the way which was fine for the car. This vnew vinyl pressing sounds amazing, absolutely zero surface noise, probably the best sounding vinyl I've bought so far, though as a previous reviewer said, I haven't got an original 1987 vinyl to compare it with. I'm happy .
Wel Wel
The original one is excellent. I just bought it from a good friend.

Plays perfect - sounds great. Brilliant album obviously. Don't have an original to compare to though.

At this stage the release of the Black Album appears to be cancelled with pre order being removed a few months back. The only other date attached to any future reissues is for Graffiti Bridge - 22nd of November

Arguably Prince's most critically highly-regarded release, and unquestionably of all of his 30+ full albums the one that best showcases his artistic range and diversity, spanning rock, funk, soul, pop, dance and soulful ballads - often simultaneously.Begat from the ill-fated Crystal Ball and Dream Factory double and triple albums, and resultant from his disbanding of the commercially successful Revolution band (notably following his sacking of long-time side-kicks Wendy [Melvoin] and Lisa [Coleman], Prince felt he needed to go in a new, sexier and harder direction than he was heading with his band. The Revolution's influence is still strongly felt throughout this double album - not least of which in the live recording of 'It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night' with the full band - and in reality most of the tracks were recorded with, or partially recorded with, his band.Notwithstanding this, the album is unquestionably his, and contains some of his strongest work ever put to vinyl. The lead single and title track, Sign 'O' The Times, is compelling for its stark and incessant rhythmic drive, thought-provoking (if not especially raw) lyrics, and earnest questioning. Immediately following on to the playful 'Play In The Sunshine', carefree and rocking good times with a mildly positive message, the intense drive of 'Housequake' (of which he famously quipped 'I can play 'Streets Have No Name' but not U2, no-one can play 'Housequake' as a snide putdown of the commercial and award success of Irish megagroup U2 and their phenomenally successful 'Joshua Tree' album) and the beautiful, thought-provoking 'The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker' which closes the first side. Hard to think of a more diverse opening side of an album.Side Two continues the proceedings with the funky dance 'It', the gorgeous and melodic 'Starfish and Coffee', the funky groove and yearning of 'Hot Thing' before closing with the beautiful soul ballad 'Forever In My Life'. Contentment.Yet it is at this point, the opening of the second disc, that Prince perhaps nails his finest, if not definitive, 20 minutes of recorded music. The modestly commercial success of the bouncy, perky 'U Got The Look', a ballad with Sheena Easton is followed by the simply beautiful, haunting and heartbreakingly open 'If I Was Your Girlfriend' (a commercial failure, not cracking any top 40 charts despite being the second single from the album). One of Prince's most beautiful and pure songs ever recorded. The powerful and groovy 'Strange Relationship' is a perfect followup, before the side closes with the underrated and sonically-flowing 'I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man'. Funk, rocking guitar and thoughtful lyrics, not to mention a driving beat make this a superb track. The album closes with the emotive, religious and moving 'The Cross', the fun live funk of 'It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night', where Prince's immediate musical past (The Revolution) is combined with his future (the likes of Cat, Miko et al) and he achieves a moment of serendipity. The album finishes with the beautiful, retro soul of 'Adore', harking back to the soul and blues of Motown and other black artists of the '70s.Sign 'O' The Times is at once sprawling yet focussed, and perfectly highlights Prince's multitude of abilities and musical styles, almost genre-defying in nature, yet being at once perfectly 'Prince'. Whilst this lacks a single (or indeed multiple) 'hits' that many great albums are built around, this is instead a piece of work for the ages, and best presents Prince for what he is - a prodigious musical talent whose influences are many yet whose sound is unique.

Yes, I know, Purple Rain will go down in history as Prince's best selling album, but let's be honest here, " Sign 'O' The Times" is his best period! Why? Maybe he was going through an identity crisis (aka, the Camille charater), maybe he was almost already fed up with the music biz, or maybe he just was tired of people trying to sound like him. Who knows! But it sure brought out the best music he ever produced!!! After this he never made a fully complete album, and after you listen to this you will understand why! There is no need for an overview at all, this a Prince Classic period!!!!!!!

I agree - this is easily Prince's best album ever and is sorely underrated. The album is worth it for "Starfish And Coffee" alone! :)

my copy has "R-261991" on the bottom left hand corner on the backside, can anyone tell me what that is.

Forgive me if my memory really HAS now failed me, but didn't the initial shipping come in the thick Double-CD cases (or is that part of what you've written in the formatting notes? If not, sorry, but i have the distinct recollection of seeing them presented in the (4-at-most-style) BIG Cd-pack that came before the slimline interlevered cases (ie; the first release of Dire Straits' "Alchemy" or Floyd's "Ummagumma" cd...? Just a thought.

The first presses on cd came in two standard cd cases with artwork in each case. The double jewel case came later.

The label is Paisley Park Records, as you can see by pics, but distributed in Italy by WEA Italiana

This is my favourite Prince album as a whole. It's great to sing along to as each song has a different rhythm and the singing follows different beats. Took me awhile to be able to wrap my tongue around some parts and also to get used to his use of starting on the off-beat etc.. It's clear to me that when he is doing studio work that he is really thinking ahead to how the song will be done live. If you view the Sign 'O' The Times concert movie after learning this album, you can see what I'm talking about in comparison. I think this is why so many people say, 'Never miss an opportunity to see Prince live.' I find his lyrics to be poetic, and if you take a look at the words beforehand and try to guess just how a particular song will be sung, you will see just how interesting his use of words, intonation, melody, and so forth is.

Prince's finest ! everything is in the right place and happens at the right time -' it's June (1987) a little disease with a big name' ("Sign Of The Times").From"Starfish and Coffee" , "Ballad of Dorothy Parker" to 'If I Was Your Girlfriend' we#ll find the best songs, probably ever written in some way or another , at least from this genious of a musician .
