The Wanting reveals how Jones has graduated from his American Primitive studies of the Takoma Records roster and is now exploring his own tunings and tones; it’s one of those rare situations where the student has become the master. A Snapshot of Mom, Scotland, 1957 leads off, exuding feeling and emotion through dexterity and virtuosity. Over delicately picked arpeggios, Jones plays subtle fretboard slides while plucking out occasional harmonic overtones. He also further explores the banjo starting with The Great Swam Way Rout, applying his own style to the instrument.

Glenn Jones considers himself a student of the "Takoma school", the group of acoustic guitar players that learned from the genius of John Fahey. This movement is sometimes referred to as American Primitive, but Takoma school is more fitting for a skilled player like Jones. Schools are places where we learn knowledge and skills, but then we have to go out and apply those skills. They don't exist in a vacuum; they're often subject to our own interpretations and unique applications. But it isn't the intricacy and technical acumen of The Wanting that makes Glenn Jones' new album so striking. There are plenty of brilliant guitar players out there, but Glenn Jones distinguishes himself by evoking deep feeling with his playing. This isn't noodling or wanking, not intricacy for intricacy's sake. These songs all establish their own feel, build their own atmosphere, and deliver it with an impressive yet subtle force.

You're The One I Love" - (Steve Horton). Show Me" - (LaLa Cope). It Hurts Too Much" - (Dana Marshall, Wardell Potts, Jr). "Meet Me Half Way There" - (Dana Marshall, Dana Meyers, Rickey Smith, Wardell Potts, Jr).
Glenn Jones is a master of American Primitive Guitar, a style invented in the late 1950s by John Fahey, whose traditional fingerpicking techniques and wide-ranging influences were used to create modern original compositions. Jones, who led the post-rock ensemble Cul de Sac, brings his own made-up tunings, the use of custom-crafted partial capos, and a highly skilled picking style on both banjo and guitar, to create personal compositions that are lyrical, emotive and elegant. Two of the album’s songs are dedications to fellow guitarists (and friends) Robbie Basho and Michael Chapman. The pieces he writes in these tunings are his way of navigating new and unfamiliar landscapes. Glenn Jones is a master of American Primitive Guitar, a style invented in the late 1950s by John Fahey.
