2014 Remastered 2014. The Complete Miles Davis Featuring John Coltrane. The Best Of Miles Davis. The Essential Miles Davis.
It compiles twelve songs recorded by Davis's nonet for the label over the course of three sessions during 1949 and 1950. Featuring unusual instrumentation and several notable musicians, the music consisted of innovative arrangements strongly inspired by classical music, and marked a. Major development in post-bebop jazz. As the title implies, these recordings are considered seminal in the history of cool jazz.
Birth of the Cool was music that focused on arrangements - the Miles Davis Nonet began as an arranger’s band. Even though different composers and arrangers created the music (Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan, John Lewis, John Carisi), Birth of the Cool has a remarkably consistent sound. It’s about a collective, not an individual. Seventy years later, why is this music still so relevant and revered? As Kahn writes in his essay, the Birth of the Cool story is about bold beginnings and debuts. Birth of the Cool was a proving ground of instrumental talent and of approaches.
Miles Davis claimed he changed jazz several times during his long career, and, certainly, Birth Of The Cool was his first notable project as a leader - one that immediately denoted him as one of the idiom’s leading tastemakers. I hear my dad - we called him The Chief - experimenting with larger group formats on Birth Of The Cool, trying to get different sonics, explains Erin Davis, who, like his cousin, is also a drummer that played with his father’s band. So that album is an entry point for people to listen to Miles’ music. A lot of people also get into Kind Of Blue and then go back to Birth Of The Cool, because it has a great title and it signifies a whole new era in music. He also believes that Birth Of The Cool marked the first important step that his father took as a leader, as well as creating his own unique musical world.
Miles Davis’ 1957 album Birth of the Cool is a modern jazz classic, a snapshot of the post-bebop direction that the young trumpeter was beginning to pursue at the ripe age of 22. It was recorded with the Miles Davis Nonet, a rotating cast of musicians that included Max Roach, Lee Konitz, Joe Shulman, and Gerry Mulligan, among others. Now, Blue Note/UMe have announced The Complete Birth of the Cool, a new compilation that brings together every studio and live recording of the Nonet between 1949 and 1950
MONTCLAIR LOCAL: In Birth of the Cool, Nelson uses many of Miles Davis’ own insights about music and himself abound in the documentary, some taken from his 1990 autobiography, Miles: The Autobiography. Miles Davis - Birth Of The Cool.
