The 20th century was a turbulent yet fascinating phase in the music industry. From modernism to minimalism, the previous century yielded richness that was shaped by the events that defined the era – war, race, sex, politics and religion each of which shaped the soundtrack of the bygone century. Interestingly, much of the music of the past century is as fascinating as the historical and cultural context of the century. 20th century gave us some ingenious musicians whose compositions have moved us, astonished us, baffled us, made us think, cry and made our hearts soar

Jazz became a musical art form around the beginning of the 20th century- a blend of African and European musical traditions, but it incorporated singular rhythmic styles including syncopation, and polyrhythms. Trumpeter, bandleader and singer Louis Armstrong, ‘Sachmo’, the Ambassador of Jazz, became the first internationally known pioneer. Ellington wrote more than one thousand compositions. His signature piece, It Don’t Mean a Thing (if It Ain’t Got That Swing) is only one of a gigantic body of work. On the piano, Oscar Peterson was recognized as a whiz who could swing at breakneck tempos with impressive nimbleness and dexterity. Dave Brubeck was one of its foremost exponents. His group played in every major city and toured in shows that also featured artists Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz.

Unquestionably, the major new influence on 20th-century music performance was electronics. Broadcasting and recording widened even further the potential audience for concert artists, at the same time as they tended to decrease the physical necessity for large new public performance arenas. Electronic instruments appeared, both amplified versions of older ones (guitar, piano, and even some.
