M83 is the debut studio album by French electropop band M83, released on 18 April 2001 on Gooom. The album was reissued on 6 September 2005 on Mute Records for its North American release, and is thus sometimes referred to as 0905. Produced by both M83 and Morgan Daguenet, the album is predominately instrumental, with dialogue samples from various films and television programmes appearing across the songs. The track titles, if read sequentially, form a short story.

The album was written during a period of mental and physical exhaustion following founding member Anthony Gonzalez’s compositional work with Cirque du Soleil and the end of the band’s international tour for Junk. To cope, Gonzalez spent the summer of 2017 swimming, watching older films and playing ‘80s videogames in coastal France-where the simple and imperfect inklings of the album began to form. DSVII will arrive Sept. Elsewhere: Gonzalez has kept busy this year by scoring the soundtrack for his brother’s ambitious French slasher flick Knife + Heart.

According to a press release, the new record was influenced heavily by early video game soundtracks, ‘80s sci-fi/fantasy films and analog synth pioneers such as Brian Eno, Suzanne Ciani, Mort Garson and John Carpenter. It was recorded in 2017-2018 exclusively with analog equipment
