Gated fuzz means that there's a circuit in there that cuts off the hiss and noise after the guitar signal goes away. Fuzz unsubtly celebrates the days of early metal yore, particularly in the spirit of fellow San Franciscan psychedelic freewheelers Blue Cheer and the assailing rhythms of Black Sabbath. The band’s self-titled record (released on Trouble In Mind) showcases Segall’s falsetto stylings over a stoner metal symphony, the prolific one taking on a different role, as the group’s drummer. The instrumental One meanders a bit, but as the album’s heaviest track, it ends the record with an unparalleled potential to flail and wail. Segall hasn’t made a more radioactive rock record in years, not even with last year’s meaty Slaughterhouse released with the Ty Segall Band.

This may be the album with the less fuzz in this top, but it totally deserves its place here. Red Lama is a Danish Psychedelic Rock and Dreams Are Free is their debut album, a quite impressing one for a first release ! Their music deeply touched me with its dramatic atmosphere, profound vocals, numerous layers of melodic sounds with the guitars and the keyboard. So yeah, Elephant Tree amazed me with their new album. A beautiful demonstration of talent mixing a Stoner-Doom heaviness with a stunning vocals work you rarely see in our scene. I just wish one thing for the next album : more epic guitar solos Also so psyched to finally see them live in February, I’m sure a lot of BOARF will be told there.

Ty Segall, the endlessly prolific fixture of San Francisco's scuzz-rock scene, has a new album coming out. No, it's not Sleeper, out August 20 on Drag City. This time it's with Fuzz, the new band he formed earlier this year- a trio consisting of Segall on drums and vocals, guitarist Charlie Moothart, and bassist Roland Cosio. The self-titled record, their debut, is out on October 1 through In the Red; the band's also doing a big supporting tour.
