Soul Deep is a vastly preferable way to hear the Box Tops' best moments, and it proves that when they were handed the right songs, they were an excellent pop-oriented blue-eyed soul group, easily ranking with the more renowned Righteous Brothers or Rascals. Like the latter group, they flirted with psychedelia on some of their poppier numbers (most notably "Sweet Cream Ladies, Forward March"), which contrasts sharply with the occasional return to down-home, rootsy soul. Even if nothing is quite as striking as the group's two big hits, "The Letter" and "Cry Like a Baby," there's enough here to make The Best of the Box Tops: Soul Deep worth the time of fans with a serious interest.

Always loved the Box Tops. This set is great because it includes the mono single versions of all their hits. Its a must have for any collector of 60s pop hits. Published on January 23, 2014.
The Box Tops were an American band of the 60s that combined soul and rock music into a popular sound epitomized by their famous single "The Letter". The band was fronted by teenaged singer Alex Chilton, and for their studio recordings after "The Letter", consisted solely of Chilton and Memphis studio musicians. For live performances, Chilton was joined by Tom Boggs (drums), Rick Allen (bass), Gary Talley (guitar), and Bill Cunningham (organ).
