The Temple Church Choir of eighteen boy-choristers and twelve choirmen has in recent years regained the prestige it enjoyed when Sir George Thalben-Ball and Ernest Lough made (in 1926) their world-famous recording of Mendelssohn’s Hear my prayer/O, for the wings of a Dove. The present choir shot back to prominence with the commission and – at the Temple Church itself – the premiere of John Tavener’s all-night musical vigil The Veil of the Temple, ‘Tavener’s masterpiece’ (The Daily Telegraph).

The choir is considered to be one of the finest choirs in London, a reputation it gained soon after Dr Edward John Hopkins became its choirmaster in 1843. Even though its primary role is to enhance the church's liturgy, the choir has been involved with some groundbreaking projects. The choristers are awarded generous bursaries towards their education. The Temple Church was built by the Knights Templar. The Round Church was consecrated in 1185 and the Chancel dates from the 1230s. In 1308, the Temple Church contained ‘two pairs of organs’ and, in the vestry, ‘twenty-eight choir copes and four little copes for the choristers. Seven hundred years later, the Temple Church still resounds to music being made to the glory of God. The Temple Church Choir and the fine Harrison & Harrison organ can also be heard in concert, along with two professional ensembles based at the church: The Temple Singers and The Temple Players
