Back Where I Belong is former Black Sabbath singer Tony Martin's first solo album. It was recorded after Martin was briefly replaced in Black Sabbath by Ronnie James Dio in the early nineties, and was released in 1992. When recording demos for the album, Martin played all the instruments himself; for the finished product, however, a variety of musicians were involved. On this album, the singer covered "Jerusalem", which originally appeared on Tyr, a Black Sabbath album on which Martin sang.

The music contained on 1992's Back Where I Belong - the debut solo album by Tony Martin, after exiting Black Sabbath for the first time - will probably come as a surprise to many. And the reason is simple, as there is little of Sabbath's trademark "detuned doom and gloom" to be found here. In its place is slick radio rock (bringing to mind such acts as Foreigner), which seemed like a bit of an anomaly in 1992, as almost all rock acts were getting raw and real once more.

Very good solo album from Black Sabbath's singer Tony Martin. The style of music is light hard rock and you would listen to this album at one breath. Many famous musicians recorded their parties on this album - Brian May (Queen), Cozy Powell (Rainbow, Sabbath, Emerson, Lake and Powell), Neil Murray (Whitsnake, Sabbath), Geoff Nichols (Sabbath), Laurence Cottle (Alan Parsons Project). Impressive voice, impressive version of "Jerusalem" by Sabbath, impressive sound producing by Nick Tauber (Thin Lizzy, Marillion).

For many a Tony Martin fan such as myself, many of us will just have to come to accept he really hasn't done much that was noteworthy outside his time with Black Sabbath. As early as 1987 upon the release of The Eternal Idol, Martin was stating in interviews that he had some material outside of Black Sabbath that he wanted to take care of. Martin wouldn't be able to take a crack at getting his material out there until 1992 with the release of his debut solo album Back Where I Belong. Just a year later he would pair up with Serbian guitarist Misha Calvin on 1993's Evolution
