Of course, Viva Hate is Morrissey’s debut album as a solo artist. However, in essence, it may arguably be regarded as the follow-up to 1987’s Strangeways, Here We Come; and that Morrissey’s entire discography, by extension, is the continuation of The Smiths’ music. After all, Guitarist Extraordinaire Johnny Marr had long admitted that the reason he eventually left The Smiths was because he could no longer feel the compulsion to dig into the musical excursions of his former partner in songwriting.
Viva Hate’ was still in the moment; Morrissey knew it and took advantage of his position. Suedehead’ rings like a Smiths outtake, ‘Break Up the Family’ is a look back at his childhood and the album’s centerpiece, ‘Late Night, Maudlin Street,’ is seven-plus minutes of Moz at his most dismal (and funniest). Viva Hate’ peaked at No. 48, higher than any Smiths album, and reached N. in the . Suedehead’ and ‘Everyday Is Like Sunday’ were both released as singles and became college-radio hits (this was before ‘Billboard’ began paying attention to modern rock)

But in the intervening quarter of a century since the hope proffered by Viva Hate, being a card-carrying Morrissey fan has become an increasingly arduous task. Musically, I don't think he's produced anything since Viva Hate that could quite touch the heights of 'Everyday Is Like Sunday' or 'Late Night, Maudlin Street'.
