Listen free to Joni Mitchell – Chalk Mark In A Rain Storm (My Secret Place, Number One and more). Long before Frank Sinatra made his Duets album, Joni Mitchell cast a variety of name singers in prominent roles for the songs on Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm.
Chalk Mark In A Rain Storm. MP3 Music, March 22, 1988. It is also not what a majority of fans would expect from a Joni Mitchell album; that being bluesy guitar ballads. Too much of that musical style can grate on me. This music is rich in form and texture. If there were 48 tracks to use, she used them. That diversity can be implied and heard in the many duets whose voices include: Peter Gabriel, Willie Nelson, Don Henley, Tom Petty and Billy Idol. When Joni Mitchell does this kind of music, she does it very well.
Joni Mitchell's music still matters on Chalk Mark. by Calvin Gilbert Baton Rouge Advocate April 1, 1988 Original article: JONI MITCHELL Chalk Mark In A Rain Storm Geffen. The music, however, is about as uncompromising as anything she's done short of her tribute to Charles Mingus
You bet, and as Chalk Mark in a Rain Storm makes clear, it does have its merits. It isn’t simply that her wordplay is unusually clean and concise; she’s finally found a credible means with which to merge literary devices with musical ones.
Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm rarely makes these points personally enough to stir the listener, and the trendy percussion sound (popular with artists like Gabriel and Kate Bush in the '80s) is already beginning to sound dated. But the songwriting and Mitchell's voice remain impressive, especially when she recalls her past with a revised version of "Corrina, Corrina" at the end. Track Listing.
