Devo was formed by Mark Mothersbaugh and Jerry Casale when they attended Kent State University in the early '70s. This was the first single released off their third album. Says Casale, "Devo didn't sit around and try to write hits, but when people liked it and wanted to key on that, we thought it made sense, we thought it was an easy song to like - it's very poppy, it's got a good hook. And it had subject matter that is more typical because here's Devo talking about girls. How could you listen to 'Girl U Want' and do that version of it?" (Check out our full Devo interview).

Freedom of Choice is the third studio album by the American new wave band Devo. It was originally released in May 1980 on the label Warner Bros. The album contained their biggest hit to date, "Whip It". Freedom of Choice was recorded between October 1979 and early 1980, at the Record Plant in Hollywood, California. The album saw the band moving in more of an overt synthpop direction, even though guitars still played a prominent role.

With Freedom of Choice, Devo completed their transition into a full-fledged synth-pop group, producing arguably their most musically cohesive effort in the process. Everything is played with a cool, polished precision that mirrors the stylized uniformity of the band's visuals; the dissonance is more subdued than in the past, and the uptight rhythms are no longer jarring, instead locking the band into a rigidly even keel

Girl U Want" is a 1980 single by American new wave band Devo. It was the first single released from the album Freedom of Choice. Girl U Want" was allegedly inspired by the song "My Sharona" by the Knack, although Devo bassist and co-writer Gerald Casale has denied this claim. The lyrics, in typical Devo style, describe a relationship marked by unrequited love/lust for a woman. Girl U Want" was first performed in December 1979 in a similar arrangement to the album version.
