Dig That Treasure is the debut album of the band Cryptacize, released in 2008. It was released on Asthmatic Kitty. The title of the album was borrowed from a musical written by Kip Cohen in 1958. Dig That Treasure opens with the airy, minimalist Stop Watch, underscored by bubbly reverb. Heaven is Human is a dodgy number that finds guitar jabs countering Torrisi’s polished vocal advances. Cohen leads the trio through the disjointed How Did the Actor Laugh? and the counterintuitive amble of We’ll Never Dream Again, further digging into the band’s treasure trove. Despite its collective simplicity, Cryptacize fills Dig That Treasure with challenging passages that shift and saunter across each of the 11 tracks.

Similar to band member (and ex-Deerhoof member) Chris Cohen’s other project, The Curtains, Cryptacize jam plenty of sparse, jagged pop fragments into Treasure without giving any of those ideas space to breathe. There’s legitimate musical promise shown on Dig That Treasure, which makes the mediocrity of the disc all the more heartbreaking. Heaven is Human and We’ll Never Dream Again are fully formed beasts, taking together Carriera’s unique instrumentation, Torrisi’s ‘60s girl-group voice, and Cohen’s avant-garde guitar acrobatics and turning the unfocused coal into spiky pop pleasures. No Coins slowly shifts between seductive and uncertain, as Torrisi regretfully intones, No coins/ We’ll never have any.

Since Cryptacize is basically the Curtains with a different drummer, it shouldn't shock anyone that their debut album Dig That Treasure sounds like a slightly tweaked version of that band. The sudden tempo changes and labyrinthine chord progressions that characterize Cohen's work still remain, but Cryptacize distinguishes itself through a subtle theatricality that is fueled by pathos. Cryptacize's music is disarmingly spare. Although both Cohen and Torrisi sing, they tend to stay out of each other's way, harmonizing only when necessary
