Instrumental versions of Welcome 2 Detroit, the very first solo LP by pioneering hip hop producer J Dilla aka Jay Dee, originally released in 2006 on BBE Music. Shortlisted for the Artistic Achievement in Music October 2001 – the US equivalent to the Mercury Prize. Whether you know it not, Jay Dee aka J Dilla aka James Dewitt Yancey has been rocking you for years. He was the driving force behind the Pharcyde as early as 1995.

Not only was this album J Dilla’s debut as a 27-year-old solo artist, but it was also the first time that name appeared on a record cover. There are novels that could be written just about this intro, recorded, according to Dilla’s original liner notes, the night B-4 the album turn-in date with a handheld mic under the influence of Möet and weed.

Jay Dee aka J Dilla - SHAKE IT DOWN. This is the Dilla joint that most accurately expresses the rumblings in my heart. Dilla collaborated frequently with Frank Nitt and Dankery Harv, producing their 2003 album for MCA Records, 48 Hours. Frank -N-Dank would feature on Pause" on Welcome and also appeared on Mc Nasty Filth off Champion Sound. Champion was Dilla’s joint effort with California producer Madlib as Jaylib. Dilla also introduced his protege Guilty Simpson to the world on this LP, on the song, Strapped. Earlier in 2003 Dilla had dropped the original Ruff Draft EP On February 7, 2006, Dilla’s birthday, he released what many think is his opus, the instrumental album Donuts

J Dilla, Jay Dee. Welcome 2 Detroit. Jay Dee made a name for himself as one-third of A Tribe Called Quest's beat-making faction (the Ummah). Thanks to his work on Common's critically acclaimed Like Water for Chocolate and Q-Tip's post-Quest endeavor Amplified, Dee has also established himself as a hip-hop super-producer. While Dee's stock continues to rise (working with Janet Jackson, Erykah Badu, and Macy Gray), his underground projects have been less fruitful. Reason being, when it comes to enlisting new MCs to collaborate with, Dee has yet to locate a lyricist capable of augmenting his sublime production
