Alto saxophonist Benjamin Herman is one of the busiest musicians from the Dutch jazz scene. As leader of New Cool Collective is his agenda to a large extent dichtgeplamuurd with performances, between the companies he knows every year by a solo cd, he works as a guest musician on productions by others, he goes on tour with Paul Weller, he was the programmer of Jazz International Rotterdam 2005 and he throws a picture with some regularity as a dj on the turntables. He went with his previous cd, soul jazz and hard bop direction yet Heterogeneity on The Itch he throws it over a very different tack. The idea behind The Itch, that Herman recorded with Ernst Glerum (double bass), Anton Goudsmit (guitar) and Han Bennink (snare drum), was to get back even a real raw jazz cd record, which was entirely stripped of studio trickery. Or as he describes in the cd booklet: ' the sound you get when Dick Dale has a date with Doris Day in a raunchy Amsterdam coffee shop. '
