Marquee Moon" is the title track from American rock band Television's first album, Marquee Moon. It was written by Tom Verlaine. In the United Kingdom, "Marquee Moon" was released as a single on April 1, 1977. Its first pressing was as a 12" single only, limited to 25,000 copies, with the song in stereo on one side and in mono on the other side. Subsequent pressings of the single were as a 7" single, with the track split into two over the A-side and B-side.
Marquee Moon is a revolutionary album, but it's a subtle, understated revolution. Without question, it is a guitar rock album - it's astonishing to hear the interplay between Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd - but it is a guitar rock album unlike any other. Where their predecessors in the New York punk scene, most notably the Velvet Underground, had fused blues structures with avant-garde flourishes, Television completely strip away any sense of swing or groove, even when they are playing standard three-chord changes
Marquee Moon is the debut album by American punk rock band Television. It was released on February 8, 1977, by Elektra Records. While often considered a seminal work to emerge from the New York punk scene of the mid-to-late 1970s, the album differed from conventional punk in its textured, guitar-based instrumental interplay and extended improvisation. As a result, it is also often cited as important to the development of post-punk in the late 1970s and 1980s.

Knew Yawkers like PSmith and JCarroll wanted to bring the passion of ARimbaud to the modern rock and roll cannon, but only Television succeeded fully. After Adventure (their 2nd record), it was over. 3 weeks ago. I bought this when it was just released. also the 1st Clash LP & 1st first Elvis Costello LP within the same month if i remember correctly. My life was never going to be the same after that. Saw Television at Birmingham Odeon - supported by Blondie - I missed most of the Blondie set but TV were great.

With Marquee Moon entrenched in the canon, it's more interesting to revisit their 1978 follow-up, Adventure. This record has always suffered by comparison, mainly because it's so easy to relate it to the first record: the arrangements and the aesthetic are roughly the same, but the music is quieter and more reflective, and that means less horsepower. It's not weak or even very different from their debut, but you might be disappointed when the earth doesn't cave beneath your feet. Television broke up after Adventure, and like typical mid-level rockers who fade away instead of dying, they went on to other projects, cut a reunion album in 1992, and still play occasional shows to this day. Writing this up now, it's hard not to feel out of place as someone too young to have caught their shows while the world is bursting with tributes and nostalgia from the people who loved them back when.

When the Marquee Moon album was released in February 1977, the title track was clearly the standout, but not something that could garner radio play in America. It was also a tough sell because the band wasn't known outside of New York, and it didn't adhere to a particular genre: "pop" doesn't do justice to the song's complexity, and it's far from "punk. The album never made the charts in the US, but was later hailed as a classic in a number of surveys
