This Land Is Your Land" is one of the United States' most famous folk songs. Its lyrics were written by American folk singer Woody Guthrie in 1940, based on an existing melody, a Carter Family tune called "When the World's on Fire", in critical response to Irving Berlin's "God Bless America. When Guthrie was tired of hearing Kate Smith sing "God Bless America" on the radio in the late 1930s, he sarcastically called his song "God Blessed America for Me" before renaming it "This Land Is Your Land.
This album by the Canadian trio is a thorough, earnest effort at doing a traditional folk set. And had the producers stuck to just the ee-vocal format offered by the members themselves, it might have worked. But for every unadorned recording such as "This Land Is Your Land" and "Shenandoah," there's an over-produced monstrosity like "Yankee Doodle" to spoil the mood of whatever surrounds it. The result is a highly schizophrenic album that can't make up its mind if it wants to be an authentic folk record or a folk-pop effort, and ends.
The band made a number of recordings for RCA (RCA Camden in the United States), and performed in both Miami and Montreal in 1962. In 1963 they also recorded an album in Montreal, A Night at Le Pavillon, based on a live folk performance. That year the band performed on a CTV Television folk music special . Much like a Whitman poem, This Land, at least as it is sung in a vast majority of the tributes, represents things not as they are but as the author thinks they should be. And also like a Whitman poem, its romantic vision, which tries to realize the promise of freedom and equality, is often mistaken as an assessment of current social realities rather than an interrogation of them. Because very few artists sing This Land in its entirety, it is virtually impossible to distinguish its patriotism from Berlin’s or even from more recent jingoistic songs such as Lee Greenwood’s God Bless the . Like any other nationalistic anthem, it uncritically proclaims the United States the land of freedom and equality and lends credence to Guthrie’s reputation
