Tears for Fears are an English pop rock band formed in Bath, England in 1981 by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. Founded after the dissolution of their first band, the mod-influenced Graduate, Tears for Fears were initially associated with the new wave synthesiser bands of the early 1980s. Later, the band branched out into mainstream rock and pop and attained international chart success. Tears for Fears were part of the MTV-driven Second British Invasion of the US.

Shout was released as a single in 1984, and is the first song on Tears for Fears' second album, Songs from the Big Chair. It was no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 3 weeks in August 1985, and remains one of their most recognizable (and excessively sampled) songs. This song was also covered by Disturbed for their album The Sickness, titled as Shout 2000. The song is often mislabeled as an emo song when the message is more a call to action than an expression of pain.

Tears for Fears’ second album is the one sound of pop-rock in the ’80s.
