What we have here definitely leans to the side of challenging music - this second album shows a self-assured Hatherley setting up a panorama of unique song compositions with no concessions to lovers of power pop and the like (as seemed possible from her work with Ash and from her debut album). Then again, no wonder, given the members of her band: Eric Drew Feldman, who worked with Captain Beefheart, Pixies, and PJ Harvey, and Rob Ellis, also of PJ Harvey and author of solo albums steeped in avant-garde music in the vein of John Cage, Erik Satie, or Olivier Messiaen.
New Worlds is the third solo album by British singer/songwriter Charlotte Hatherley, released on 16 October 2009. Like previous album The Deep Blue, it was released on Hatherley's own Little Sister label in the UK and Minty Fresh in the US. "White" and "Alexander" were released as singles in 2009. Straight Lines" – 3:35. Little Sahara" – 2:51.
While The Deep Blue is Charlotte Hatherley’s attempt at breaking away from previous project Ash (yes, this is her second solo album, but the first was released while she was still with the band), the only tracks that don’t grate away at the eardrums are those that vaguely resemble her former musical mates. ’I Want You To Know’' is one of two standout tracks on this album. Upbeat, emotive, and miles ahead of anything else on this LP, this is where Hatherley sounds most comfortable
The second album of the Charlotte Hatherley triptych came on the heels of her departure from Ash. Understandably, there is a bit more emotion applied to this record than her first. The added complexity and depth in these songs is evident from the start. Coupled with her new independence, Charlotte creates a rather different type of music, yet similar in its pop rock roots.
Charlotte Franklin Hatherley (born 20 June 1979) is an English singer, songwriter, musician and guitarist. She initially came to prominence as guitarist and backing vocalist for alternative rock band Ash. Since leaving Ash in 2006, she has pursued a solo career and also acted as a touring instrumentalist for Bryan Ferry, KT Tunstall, Bat for Lashes and Birdy. On 20 January 2006 it was announced that Hatherley would be leaving Ash in an amicable breakup. Hatherley's second album The Deep Blue was released on 5 March 2007. It was preceded by two singles; "Behave", in December, and "I Want You To Know" along with an accompanying UK and Ireland tour.
The second solo album from the former Ash guitarist veers between the lightweight and the precise. Songs such as the single Behave, Dawn Treader and especially the intricate Be Thankful are intriguing.
