The Wickedest Man in the World’, as the press called him, died in Hastings in 1947. There are people living locally who believe an aura of evil, his evil, lurks in the locations associated with him. Aleister Crowley was notorious as a traitor, a deviant, a ‘drug fiend’, and as a man in league with the Devil. Many years ago, such matters were taken seriously. So much so that Hastings Borough Council prohibited his cremation here. In life, Crowley played up to his image. Asked his name, he would confirm his diabolical reputation by replying ‘666’ or ‘The Beast’.

Crowley gained widespread notoriety during his lifetime, being a recreational drug experimenter, bisexual and an individualist social critic. He was denounced in the popular press as the wickedest man in the world and a Satanist. Crowley has remained a highly influential figure over Western esotericism and the counter-culture, and continues to be considered a prophet in Thelema. In 2002, a BBC poll ranked him as the seventy-third greatest Briton of all time.

Aleister Crowley was also a 33rd and 97th Degree Freemason and is recognized as the master Satanist of the 20th century. In 1971, guitarist Jimmy Page bought Crowley’s Boleskine House on the shore of Loch Ness where Crowley practiced his hellish, satanic sex-magick rituals, including human sacrifices. Ozzy Osbourne in his solo album Blizzard of Ozz released the song Mr. Crowley which was about Crowley's struggles and beliefs. Ministry have also referred to Crowley in lyrics and sampled his voice on the track "Golden Dawn" from their Land of Rape and Honey album. Crowley had adopted this title, which means "the Great Beast". The German power metal band Edguy has a song, "Out of Control", which refers to Crowley by name.

The wickedest man in the world? During the Thelema Abbey scandal, one newspaper referred to Crowley as ‘the wickedest man in the world. He would have denied this, claiming that his work was truly good because it freed men from earthly rules and opened up truly spiritual experiences. But there can be no doubt that he also enjoyed his notoriety, and his fame only increased after death. Aleister Crowley was a regular visitor to Tredegar House, home of Evan Morgan, the last Viscount Tredegar. In addition to Crowley, Morgan boasted a wide network of notable contacts including Lloyd George, Queen Mary, GK Chesterton, Augustus John and Aldous Huxley. The proud owner of a menagerie of wild animals, Morgan was also an expert in the occult. Known as ‘the Black Monk’, Crowley described him as ‘adept of adepts’.

Aleister Crowley is the occultist and Satanist that is perhaps the most well known. His works The Book of the Law, Magick in Theory and Practice and The Book of Thoth are broadly used in occult circuits. Long after his death, Crowley became a hero for many young people within the flower-power movement. The irony in all this is that these young people cried for peace and love. David Bowie referred to Crowley in his song Quicksand from the album The Man Who Sold the World. Graham Bond thought he was Crowley’s illegitimate son and recorded albums of satanic rituals with his band Holy Magick.

Mine is numbered 34 out of 315. It would appear the numbering has to be taken with a pinch of salt. Just like Aleister.

My copy is numbered 177 out of 418. What alerted you to the numbering inconsistency? My copy also contains a couple of flyers advertising other releases by Current 93 et al
