Although four songs (which are given rather sappy treatment) feature Ray Heindorf directing the Warner Bros. Orchestra, most of the other performances are not from the film's soundtrack. Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald sang in the movie but are not on this album. However, the same hot combo from the movie (and one that would soon have an independent life) is featured on eight numbers.

Jack Webb directed and starred in Pete Kelly’s Blues, a film about corruption and speakeasies in the jazz era during Prohibition. There were several LPs issued with the film’s title, none of which were the actual soundtrack album from the film. The Columbia album comes the closest, with the exception of vocals. The film’s two primary vocalists, Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald were both under contract to Decca, who issued their own album of studio recordings by their two contracted artists
