Its another amazing album from Wye Oak. Much less worried than Shriek, more thoughtful than Tween, just considered, roaring melodies and quiet moments laced with what sounds like real introspection. Even the less great tracks like It Was Not Natural would blow away tracks by similar musicians. Symmetry, Join and Lifer are standouts but you really can't go wrong with anything here. I don't know where they keep finding these musical treasures but I'm happy the seam runs deep. One person found this helpful.

Wye Oak. Produced by Wye Oak. Album The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs. The Instrument Lyrics. Suffering I remember suffering Feeling heat and then the lack of it But not so much what the difference is. I was there You were there and I was there I can't hold onto my anger Though, sometimes it would do me good. Oh, look away Un-animate You only live to be seen as such You want it too much. Picture me The idea of me anyway The instrument you once ignored It is moving of its own accord

Wye Oak, The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs. Grade: B. Across 12 radiant tracks, the vague pronoun that lingers so mysteriously in the title of Wye Oak’s ambitious new album becomes shorthand for any number of anxieties causing singer Jenn Wasner’s inner conflicts. Sometimes, it is the random sequence of events that makes up our past and determines our present. Elsewhere, it’s the guilt of privilege and success. Start here: The title track is an uplifting distillation of everything The Louder I Call has to offer: layers upon layers of perpetually arpeggiating synths sliding in and out of place around a chorus of Jenn Wasners, their off-kilter rhythms and short lifespans making the song’s burst of squawking guitar the single foothold in a wall of shimmering sound.

This one (pardon the pun) runs the gammut from amazing music to jokes about runners. More From Music that Matters. Music That Matters, Vol. 676 - Grand-Slammable. DJ Kevin Cole hits it out of the park with a rockin’ music mix featuring new Sleater-Kinney, Amyl and the Sniffers, Bill Callahan, Sufjan Stevens, and local.

Wye Oak’s latest record opens with the quietly dissonant sound of a host of instruments tuning up. It’s an enigmatic introduction that gives nothing away about what’s coming next - which is precisely the point. After all, attempting to predict where Wye Oak might go from one album to the next is, by this point, either brave or stupid, depending on how charitable you’re feeling. They worked on The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs the same way they did for Shriek; developing different ideas in different cities and different mindsets, and then piecing it all together in week-long bursts. It tells, too; Shriek was a smooth, cohesive record, but The Louder I Call is thoroughly impressionistic, following no set aesthetic or manner of construction and instead becoming the first Wye Oak album to genuinely defy categorisation, to laugh in the face of stylistic pigeonholing.
