The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle is the soundtrack album of the film of the same name by the Sex Pistols. By the time the soundtrack was being prepared, Johnny Rotten (Lydon) had left the band and refused to participate in the project, so the "proper" Sex Pistols tracks were done by taking Lydon's vocals from the October 1976 demo session recordings and rerecording their instrumental tracks (done by Paul Cook and Steve Jones).

The Swindle was former manager Malcolm McLaren’s fictionalised satire of the Sex Pistols story, filmed after John Rotten’s departure from the band in 1978; and without his participation. Steve Jones, Sid Vicious, Ronnie Biggs, Malcolm McLaren and Tadpole Tudor are among the vocalists on the album. The album also includes rehearsal cover versions with John Rotten dating back to 1976.

Simply for bearing Sex Pistols’ name, The Great Rock’n’Roll Swindle has always been contentious. Yet the superior stuff on The Great Rock’n’Roll Swindle ensures the album deserves some hearty reappraisal. First and foremost, the record allowed Sid Vicious to shine brightly, if briefly, with his charismatic vocals leading the way on souped-up covers of Eddie Cochran’s ‘Something Else’ and ‘C’mon Everybody’.
