Nightfall is the second studio album by the Swedish doom metal band Candlemass, released on 9 November 1987 through Axis Records. After being dropped from the label Black Dragon Records, Candlemass were the first band signed to Axis. The group had a new line-up from their previous album including vocalist Messiah Marcolin, whose decisions became instrumental during the production and release stages of the album.

On Candlemass' sophomore album, Nightfall, the epic wailer was replaced with fluffy tenor Messiah Marcolin, complete with as much vibrato as frizzy, afro-like hair. In many ways, this change is similar to the vocalist change in the popular British band Iron Maiden, even down to Messiah Marcolin's fame and fan-love surpassing that of all the other singers, including Johan. But, Messiah aside, Nightfall is an interesting progression from Epicus to say the least. Maybe it's the album art, or the quality of the songs, but there is a new feel to the music of Candlemass.

Candlemass are widely accepted as one of, if not the, first of their kind to play modern doom metal. While Candlemass didn't spontaneously create doom metal (as Black Sabbath and Pentagram have influenced the genre) they did impact it greatly with the release of their 1986 debut, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, an album which showcased their epic sound, thus crowning them the founders of the epic doom genre.

Like the previous album, Nightfall was recorded at Thunderload Studios in Stockholm with Ragne Wahlquist as engineer. Wead's brief membership in Candlemass lead to him allegedly recording rhythm guitar, harmony and acoustic guitars and keyboards on the album, although the only thing that is confirmed by the band as his is the recording of his song "Black Candles". Two singles were released from Nightfall: "Samarithan" and "At the Gallows End". A music video was directed by for the song "Bewitched" by Jonas Åkerlund.
